“Jump Rope For Heart” Fun at DL

First through fifth grade physical education students participated in Jump Rope for Heart, a fundraiser benefiting the American Heart Association. During this event, students practiced a variety of rope jumping skills and learned about how to keep the heart healthy and strong. This experience created much excitement and interest from our school community, and was enjoyed by all! We are happy to announce that over $23,000 was donated to the American Heart Association!

Reminder: Monday, Feb. 16th – Yes, There is School!

The two days students missed earlier this year due to inclement weather will be made up on Monday, Feb. 16 and Monday, March 2. Students are expected to be in attendance on those days.

Students will make up the Feb. 2 snow day at the end of the school year.

Behavior Assembly

All students of Dual Language learned more about “Respect, Responsible, and Safe” behavior during our Behavior Assembly.  Here, children learned about the new behavior matrix and our way of tabulating behavior  with Class DoJo in the common areas…hallway, cafeteria and the like.  Our hope is that kids will make the community a better place as they strive to be the best version of themselves.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR THE MOTHER DAUGHTER TEA

The PTO is looking for volunteers to help with the Mother Daughter Tea on Saturday, March 7th, 2015.  In addition, we are also looking for help the week prior to the Tea, for set up the evening of Friday, March 6th, and for Bakers to donate items to the Tea.  In the SignUp Genius link below, you will see openings for 1-2 hour time slots as well as for “Bakers”!

This is a great way to learn about the 4th-grade Mother Daughter Tea especially if you are a parent that will be attending in the coming years.  Also, if you have attended the Tea in the past and enjoyed it, this is a great way to show your support for its continued success.  If you are a 4th grade parent, don’t worry about helping this year, as we want you to enjoy the event!

5 Essentials Survey for Parents

Hawthorn District 73 is joining the Illinois State Board of Education in the third statewide survey of school climate and learning conditions. The survey provides a unique opportunity for teachers, students, and parents to have a voice in improving their schools. From now through March 13, teachers, students in 6th-8th grades, and parents will be asked to take a 20-minute research-based survey to help identify strengths and weaknesses in their school’s learning environment. The survey will serve as an opportunity for schools to reflect on progress since the last statewide implementation.

Hawthorn students will be taking the survey during their regularly scheduled classes between January 20 and March 13.

Parents:  Please click here to take the 5Essentials Survey

https://survey.5-essentials.org/illinois/

The Illinois 5Essentials Survey provides a comprehensive picture of a school’s organizational culture in an individualized report measuring five “essentials” critical for school success:

  • Effective Leaders
  • Collaborative Teachers
  • Involved Families
  • Supportive Environment
  • Ambitious Instruction

Twenty years of University of Chicago research in more than 400 schools has shown that schools that were strong on at least three of the 5Essentials were 10 times more likely to make substantial gains in improving student reading and math than schools that were weak on three or more of the Essentials. Those differences remained true even after controlling for student and school characteristics, including poverty, race, gender, and neighborhood characteristics. Strength on components within the Essentials also correlated with increased teacher retention, student attendance, college enrollment, and high school graduation.

Hawthorn participated in the first statewide 5Essentials Survey and is opting to administer the survey to teachers and students again this year to continue tracking and informing progress.

Principals and superintendents will receive their 5Essentials Reports in May 2015. Survey results will also be reported on the 2015 State School Report Card website and the full 5Essentials Reports will also be released in the fall.

On behalf of the Illinois State Board of Education, UChicago Impact is providing Illinois 5Essentials to schools statewide. Teachers, students and parents may complete the Illinois 5Essentials Survey online. For more information visit: https://illinois.5-essentials.org.
