Notification: fertilizer and weed control application

Dear Hawthorn Family:

This letter is to inform you that a Hawthorn contractor is scheduled to apply fertilizer and weed control to our district lawns on the afternoon of May 10, 2016. A projected backup date is scheduled for May 14, 2016, if needed. Sprayed areas will be posted, and people are encouraged to stay off of the areas for two hours after the application.

Hawthorn takes great care to ensure that we maintain the safest environment possible for our students and the entire community. Projects such as fertilizer application are scheduled during times when students are not present and school is not in session. Whenever possible, we use environmentally friendly “green” products.

Hawthorn School District #73 moved to an online notification request system, which is also explained in the Student/Parent Handbook, as well as on the District website, www.hawthorn73.org. If you are interested in receiving notification for the coming school year, please review the Handbook information and send your formal request along with your name and mailing address to notification@hawthorn73.org. You must submit yearly if you want to be included on the notification list.

Sincerely,

James Staples

Architect Contract Approved

At its April meeting the Hawthorn Board of Education authorized an architectural contract for DLR Group, of Chicago.

DLR Group estimates a 12 to 14 week process to develop an Educational Facility Master Plan for Hawthorn School District 73. That process will include analyzing the facilities, meeting with stakeholders, and developing proposals. As part of the master plan, the architectural team, administration and board members will include valuable input from parents, staff, students, and community members. Please click here for more on the plan.

Personalized Learning

Personalized learning takes off in Hawthorn District 73 as shown in this brief video.

Project Change

Hawthorn School of Dual Language children sorted and folded pajamas that they donated to a children’s advocacy organization. The school’s student council raised more than $430 for Project Change. Council sponsor Susan Glickson purchased books and pajamas that will be distributed to children through Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Lake County.

“I felt good that I was able to raise this much money for people who don’t have what I have. I like sharing books that I enjoy with other kids,” said fifth grader Mitchell Leshchiner.
