Students and their traps

How to Catch a Leprechaun

Everyone knows that leprechauns love gold. First-grade students at the School of Dual Language created colorful and decorative traps to catch the leprechaun using gold coins, rainbows, four leaf clovers and other objects. While it appears the leprechaun was once again too smart to be caught, this was a fun STEM project for the students and their families.

SOAR Assembly

SOAR Assembly Focuses on Managing Emotions

The focus for this month’s SOAR assembly was helping students to “Manage My Emotions”.  The school’s Project Change students performed a skit that reinforced this theme.  Congratulations to Mrs. Almora’s class for being the winner of the “SOARing Eagle” trophy.

Andres Salguero's performance

123 Andres is Fun for Everyone

Third through fifth graders were singing and dancing as Andres Salguero and Christina performed at the School of Dual Language during a morning assembly on March 8. Even the teachers were dancing as the Latin Grammy-winning music duo provided lessons through music. Their songs provided a fun and creative way for the students to learn about North, Central, and South America and the Caribbean. They spoke and sang in English, Spanish and regularly used sign language. Whatever the language, their performance was full of fun for everyone.

Classes Take Part in Language/Cultural Exchange

Spanish and English speaking students are learning from each other at the School of Dual Language and Townline. Mrs. Bolender’s second-grade class at Townline visited Ms. Naughton’s second-grade class at the School of Dual Language to learn some basic Spanish sounds. The Townline students wanted to learn how to say the Pledge of Allegiance in Spanish. It is a tradition that Dual Language classes recite the Pledge of Allegiance in English and Spanish, while Townline recites it in English. Mrs. Bolender’s class will now be able to recite the pledge in English and Spanish. Kudos to Mrs. Bolender and her students for wanting to branch out and learn the pledge in Spanish! And, Ms. Naughton’s students were impressed to learn that Mrs. Bolender’s students speak other languages at home, such as Korean, Russian, and Cambodian.

State Senator Talks with Students

State Representative Visits

Fourth graders in the classes of Ms. Velazquez, Ms. Mejia and Ms. Brandt received quite a treat on Friday. Illinois State Representative Carol Sente stopped by to talk with students. She answered many questions about what her job was like and what motivated/inspired her to become a representative.  She also asked the students a number of questions and complimented them on how knowledgable they were.  For instance, students knew the answers to the questions:  what is the state bird (cardinal), what is the state flower (violet), and what is the state animal (white-tailed deer). She stumped them, however, when she asked what was the state reptile. Who would have known it is a turtle.
