New Interim Principals

Please Welcome New Interim Co-Principals

Please welcome Mrs. Shelley Fabrizio and Dr. Alison Gordon as the new Interim Co-Principals at the School of Dual Language for the 2020-2021 school year.

They both have extensive experience in education. Mrs. Fabrizio has a social work and special education background. She began her career in education at an adolescent day hospital and therapeutic day school. Switching from private to public education, she then served as a social worker, special education coordinator and administrator of an early education program/enrichment program at North Shore School District 112. Prior to retiring in 2019, she was an elementary school principal for two schools with a total of 13 years in Arlington Heights School District 25.

Dr. Gordon has been an elementary school principal for 31 years. The last three school districts she served were Northbrook School District 27, North Shore School District 112, and Skokie School District 73 1/2. During her tenure in Skokie, she was principal of Elizabeth Meyer School, Program Director of the Bilingual and EL Programs and coordinator of the district’s community engagement efforts. Dr. Gordon teaches graduate students in the School of Education and Social Policy at Northwestern University and provides professional learning programs to teachers, coaches, and school leaders.  In addition, she serves as a consultant to the Illinois Principals Association.

Mrs. Fabrizio and Dr. Gordon worked together at North Shore School District 112 and are excited about working together again. They will join the Hawthorn community on August 3.

Heartfelt Messages

Here are just a few of the uplifting messages that School of Dual Language teachers made for their students.

Students reading

All Students Read Together on Read Across America Day

In celebration of Read Across America Day, all students at Townline and the School of Dual Language dropped everything and read for half an hour beginning at 9:05 a.m. on Friday, March 6. For the kindergarten and first grade classrooms, fourth and fifth grade students read to the students. Read Across America Day is an annual observance inaugurated by the NEA (National Education Association). It is held in recognition of Dr Seuss’ birthday.

Students on a gallery walk

Students Go Back in Time Through Gallery Walk

Fourth grade students at the School of Dual Language participated in a fun gallery walk between the classrooms of Mrs. Brandt, Mrs. Velazquez and Miss Mejia. They observed a wide variety of objects/artifacts and imagined how Native Americans might have used these items hundreds of years ago. This was part of a social studies segment on the history of Illinois. The objects were on loan from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.

Students tracing an image.

Learning About Civil Rights Heroes

Mrs. Korn’s second-grade students at the School of Dual Language learned about important figures in the civil rights movement, such as Rosa Parks, Ruby Bridges, Jackie Robinson and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. They researched and wrote paragraphs in Spanish about these figures. They also traced their images to create large posters, which will be displayed in the hallways.

Students making cards.

Doing Something Special for Others

During Kindness Week at the School of Dual Language, fourth grade students wanted to do something that would brighten the lives of others. They made colorful Valentine’s Day cards for Brookdale residents.

Students jumping rope

Jumping Rope for a Good Cause

Students at the School of Dual Language, including these third graders, are getting exercise and helping others at the same time through their involvement in the Kids Heart Challenge benefiting the American Heart Association. The program teaches kids jump rope skills and helps prepare them for success through physical and emotional well-being, while raising funds to fight heart disease.

students in spelling bee

Spelling Bee Challenges Students in More Ways Than One

A group of fourth and fifth grade students participated in the School of Dual Language’s spelling bee on January 17. This event not only tests students’ ability to spell, it tests their ability to stay calm and focused as they stand in the spotlight. The students did a great job as they moved through round after round, spelling words such as dainty, garland, batteries and filters. By round 13, the contest was down to four students. A few rounds later, Campbell F. won by spelling the word legend. Maeve M. came in second and Lucas J. came in third. Congratulations to all the students.
