Writer and Illustrator Visit Townline and the School of Dual Language

Second-grade students at Townline and the School of Dual Language got a special treat on Nov. 5. Writer Elliot Kalan and illustrator Tim Miller gave a presentation on writing and illustrating books. Mr. Kalan spoke about what stories inspired him as a child, and how those stories inspired him to write his own stories.  Mr. Miller also spoke about his love for comic books as a child, and how that love inspired him to draw. The two of them collaborated on the book, “Horse Meets Dog,” which they read to the group.  They also worked with the second-graders to create a short story, which was illustrated by Mr. Miller.

Katherine Applegate

Renowned Children’s Author Visits

Young adult and children’s fiction writer Katherine Applegate visited Townline and the School of Dual Language today. All fourth and fifth grade students listened to her talk about her books, which include Animorphs, Remnants, Everworld and other book series. She won the 2013 Newbery Medal for her 2012 children’s novel The One and Only Ivan. At one point, she gave the students 10 seconds to use their imagination to invent their own fiction species. Then she asked students to talk about what they imagined. One student said his species was a turtle that had the power to slow everything down around him. She also encouraged students to not be afraid to make mistakes and to follow their passion.
